Excerpts will be giving from the following textbooks, with other reading materials given on occasion.  Please read pages as listed in the course schedule BEFORE you come to class:

Ø      Bates, Daniel G. and Fratkin, Elliot M. (2003). Cultural anthropology, 3rd edition, Boston: Pearson Education, Inc.

 

Ø      Kottak, Conrad Phillip (1997) Anthropology: The Exploration of Human Diversity, 7th edition, New York: McGraw-Hill Companies, Inc.

Objectives:

 

Ø      To acquire an awareness and understanding of human diversity, behavior and beliefs in different settings and times.

Ø      To acquire an understanding of what anthropology is, and how anthropologists approach the study of culture and people in varied contexts.

Ø      To develop an awareness of culture and to develop skills in comparing and interacting with our own and other cultures via anthropological concepts and methods.

Ø      To develop skills in intercultural communication, observation, and critical thinking.

Course format:

Class meets once a week for a total of three hours. The class will include lectures, group discussions and activities. Students are encouraged to ask questions, participate in discussions and share their perspectives with the class.

Course requirements and Grading:

Quizzes (4 x 5 points)                           20%

Field Assignments (3 x 15 points)          45%

Final Exam                                            35%

Attendance and Class Participation:

Attendance is not graded, however it is expected.  Students who attend every class and participate will receive 5 bonus points to their grade.

Quizzes:

4 Quizzes will be given, one every three weeks.  They are retrospective, i.e based on the readings and discussion of the previous 3 weeks.  The format will be multiple-choice.

 

 

Field Assignments:

            Field Assignments linking the concepts and methods discussed in class with practical applications to students’ own environment will be a major part of the course.  There will be 3 Field Assignments, each one counting 15 points.  Details on each assignment will be given at the appropriate time, however, all assignments share the following requirements:

 

Ø      Field notes may be written in Turkish, but final assignments must be written in English.

Ø      The final write-ups should be 3-5 pages in length, double spaced, and typed.

Ø      Students should be thorough and original in their work – i.e. while you can consult with your peers you should not copy them!

 

Final examination

            The final examination will cover all the material discussed in the class. It will be multiple-choice with one short essay question which must be written in English.
